Perched majestically at the highest point of Sydney’s historic Rocks district, the Shangri-La Sydney Hotel stands as a beacon of luxury and Asian hospitality in Australia’s most iconic harbor city. Our journey began as part of the visionary expansion of the Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts group, founded in 1971 by Malaysian business magnate Robert Kuok, whose philosophy of hospitality “from the heart” continues to guide our service ethos to this day.

Since 1992

When our doors first opened in 1992 as the ANA Hotel Sydney, our distinctive architectural presence was already making a statement on the Sydney skyline. The building was thoughtfully designed to harmonize with its complex existing environment, navigating the intricate building controls that protected the character of The Rocks while creating something truly spectacular.

The architect’s original concept was that of a lighthouse—a symbolic guide welcoming travelers to Sydney’s shores—sitting proudly at the head of the historic Rocks precinct. This vision manifested in our soaring tower that would later house our renowned Horizon Club lounge, offering panoramic views that have become synonymous with the Shangri-La experience in Sydney.

In the years since our establishment, we have evolved while maintaining an unwavering commitment to excellence.
